An employee in the park where I live stole ~$20,000 from me and two other residents by taking money intended to repair our damaged awnings and losing it all in an online cryptocurrency scam. When I contacted the sheriff's department, I was told that because it was of a "contractual nature", it had to go through civil court, not criminal court. Unfortunately, he has no assets and lives paycheck to paycheck, so it was going to cost more than it was worth.
As it that was not bad enough, he then committed bank fraud by altering and redepositing a check. He pled guilty to the felony and was given two years of supervised probation, but no jail time and he is still employed by the park. I am beginning to think the only way you go to prison now days is to set a busload of nuns and orphans on fire in front of a police station while wearing a MAGA hat.
